This process is known as pseudomorphism. The original mineral changes, but its shape is preserved. Over time, with oxidation, hawk’s eye can transform into tiger’s eye. In that sense, it represents an earlier stage. On the Mohs scale, it sits around 7. Solid enough for regular wear.

The palette stays within a narrow range, but it’s not flat. Deep blue is the base. Gray softens it. Occasionally, a slight green tint appears depending on the source and lighting.

How to Identify It
Recognition is based on movement. If the surface reflects light uniformly, it’s likely not hawk’s eye. The defining feature is that narrow band that shifts when the stone is turned.
The luster should feel silky rather than glassy. Smooth, but not reflective in a sharp way. Color alone isn’t enough. The structure tells more.
Care, Cleaning and Handling
Hawk’s eye is relatively low maintenance. Warm water and a soft cloth are usually sufficient. Mild soap can be used if needed.
Because of its quartz base, it resists scratches reasonably well. Still, storing it separately helps avoid surface wear over time. No specific sensitivity to light or temperature, but avoiding harsh chemicals is recommended.
